  • It is an offence for a person to make a false statement or to withhold information which is relevant to an application for housing. For homelessness applicants it is also an offence to fail to inform the housing authority of any material changes in circumstances.
  • If false information is given to gain a tenancy this Council may have grounds to regain possession of the property that the Council or Housing Association has provided. We may also use and check the information you have provided for the investigation and prevention of fraud, anti-social behaviour and criminal activity. This may include sharing your information with police services, credit reference agencies, governmental organisations (e.g., Department for Work and Pensions and HM Revenue and Customs), housing associations and other local authorities. We also take part in the National Fraud Initiative's anti-fraud data matching exercise for these purposes.

Your information will be held and processed in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation 2016 and the Data Protection Act 2018. Benefit entitlements are based on the amount of Local Housing Allowance that you are entitled to. Local Housing Allowance is calculated according to the number of bedrooms that you need and you may find the following information helpful as a guide to work out your bedroom entitlement.

You are entitled to one bedroom for:

  • every adult couple (married or unmarried)
  • any other adult aged 16 or over
  • any two children of the same sex aged under 16
  • any two children aged under 10
  • any other child

There are, however extra rules if you are:

  • aged 25 or over, single and do not live with any dependants
  • aged under 25, single and do not live with any dependants
  • a couple and do not live with any dependants
  • a care leaver aged under 22
  • severely disabled

Universal Credit

Universal Credit is a benefit for people of working age. It had replaced the following benefits that people claim when out of work or when working and living on a low income.

  • housing benefit
  • income support (IS)
  • income-based jobseekers allowance (JSA)
  • income-related employment and support allowance (ESA)
  • child tax credit working tax credit

A claim for universal credit can be made whether you are working or out of work. Your claim continues if you move in and out of work as long as your income and savings don't go above certain limits.

If you are a tenant of a social landlord and are in fear of abuse and harassment, you should contact your landlord directly to report the issue. In most cases they will resolve reports informally and without the need to use any legal powers.
